Saturday, January 10: Strait Creek Prairie Bluffs, Southern Ohio – in Pike and Adams Counties
Cedar Clearing. Join us for the first Strait Creek cedar clearing project of the quarter. We will cut and pile cedar trees in an effort to open up areas that support rare Ohio prairie communities. Strait Creek contains some of the state’s finest examples of little bluestem prairie, a globally rare plant community. The preserve consists of large mosaic grasslands and prairies interspersed with second-growth Appalachian oak forest. In the past, the area was disturbed and deprived of fire, allowing the cedar trees to move in and take over the prairies. If it has been wet recently, be prepared to cross a small stream (only 3 inches deep at most) on the 15-20 minute walk to the project site. Please be sure to note that the meeting time for the Strait Creek projects is 9:45 a.m. This is a strenuous project.
To register please call Susan Zimmermann at 614-717-2770 ext. 100
Crew Chief: Mike Shifrin. Please call Mike at 614-262-5451 if you need to cancel your participation after you have registered with Susan. Also, please call Mike if you have questions about the status of a project.
Saturday, January 17: Kitty Todd, Northwest Ohio – in the city of Swanton on Old State Line Road
We will collect and pile brush that has resulted from tree cutting that was done by staff to restore the preserve’s savannas and prairies. Piling this brush makes it easier for staff to do additional restoration work at these sites. We will also have a campfire where we will toast marshmallows and make s’mores.
This is a moderate to strenuous project.
To register for this project please call Gary Haase at 419-867-1521 .

Saturday, January 17: White Pine Bog, Northeast Ohio - Geauga County
Woody or Garlic Mustard Control. This preserve forms part of Ohio’s finest remaining wetlands and harbors more than a dozen endangered or threatened plant and animal species. Join the team of volunteers in the persistent fight against the invasive plant species that threaten this precious natural area. If the ground is not snow covered and garlic mustard is visible then we will work to eradicate it. If it is snowy, we will work to control the buckthorn and muliflora rose population. Do something good for the environment—sign-up for all three White Pine Bog projects this quarter!

Take this opportunity to help protect an irreplaceable natural area in the Cuyahoga River watershed in northeastern Ohio. Flatiron Lake bog developed in a kettle-hole that formed when the Wisconsinan ice sheet retreated approximately 12,000 years ago. It is a great sight to see. Cedar Clearing. We have four projects this quarter at “The Edge” and you won’t want to miss any of them. Each project at the Edge of Appalachia this quarter is on a different part of the preserve. Registering for all of the projects in January, February and March will give you a great “tour” of several parts of this diverse 13,500 acre preserve. One of the many benefits of volunteering is getting to see the natural beauty in Ohio that other people don’t have the opportunity to see. On this project day we will cut, drag and pile invasive cedar and pine trees to prevent them from overtaking open areas. We will work on the Forrest Grooms tract. Gather your friends and family and spend the day volunteering to preserve this diverse and valuable prairie community. It is well worth the drive!

Saturday, March 7: Herrick Fen, Northeast Ohio – in Portage County
Buckthorn Control. We have made great headway in fighting the buckthorn over the years, so we’ll keep at it and work toward the preserve’s boundaries. On this work day we will use saws and loppers to cut the buckthorn then treat the stumps with herbicide to prevent re-growth. There will be a short, 5-10 minute, walk to the worksite through habitat that supports over two dozen state listed species, including the state endangered bayberry, which is found in only three locations in Ohio. Though buckthorn is not generally found in areas of standing water, at Herrick it is always a good idea to wear old or expendable tennis shoes. Please note that this preserve has poison sumac. Come help us preserve the bayberry and other native species as we work to eradicate the invasive buckthorn. Register today!
